Board Games

What are your favorite? Specifically Euro-style strategy games. I work for a game/puzzle store and help out my friend who opened a board game cafe, so am always interested in what people are playing.

My overall favorite this past year has been Lords of Waterdeep. While I go through little phases with games, I've been coming back to that over and over again.

Clue, Settlers of Catan, Monopoly, Life, Stratego, Chess, Checkers, Connect 4 (if this counts), Bananagrams (if this counts), Scrabble, Boggle (ibid), candyland!

The only euro-style board game thus far listed is Settlers of Catan- the most popular one in the world!

So fyi, generally speaking, whereas classic American games like monopoly and risk are majority luck and minority strategy, the European style of game is the inverse- minority luck and majority strategy. This differs from abstract strategy games such as chess and connect 4 (which I quite enjoy as well) which are pure strategy- not an ounce of luck involved.

I'm actually quite surprised at the responses- there's usually a huge overlap between video gamers and board gamers. Hell, the major consumer convention for Video games (PAX) doubles as a board game convention with mostly the same participants in both. For a world going through a board game Renaissance you guys are decidedly living in the dark ages!

You cant beat chess. Dad and I have a standing game, this particular round has lasted 21/2 weeks  lol  We make 1 move a day.

Hopefully Mom doesn't "accidently" knock our piece over, AGAIN! she a sneaky one...

I prefer the the Euro style games, however I'm not usually a fan of most abstract strategy games. If you could point me in the right direction that'd be fawking awesome because I haven't touched a board game in ages, mostly due to lack of anyone to... play with.

There are definitely sites for some games. When I first joined EH some years ago, they had Monopoly nights.. they ended not long after I joined in, can't imagine why.

You guys can always check local card/hobby shops in your area, some have nights dedicated to board games.. if you don't mind the stranger danger.

My personal favorite has always been Monopoly, I doubt that will ever change. I've heard fantastic things about Cards Against Humanity, if that counts.

Settlers of Catan, The Game of Thrones Game (yes, it exists-and it's awesome), and Monopoly are the only ones I really ever play. I do enjoy a good game night-just don't have many of those.

Diplomacy - very fun and brings the worst out of most people

Old School & super intense. Power to you!

Raffizle. Are there any of these games we'd be able to play as a group online?

Ish. Many of the most popular games have produced online versions, but many of them you have to pay for. Also, a big part of many games (in addition to strategy)is the social componant. You may be able to replicate that somewhat on TS, but you definitely lose the visual observation and the physical interaction of the board game itself. If any of you lived in Boston I'd send you to my friend's board game cafe!

Catan of course. I played the game of thrones game once and it was pretty epic- but definitely felt that I need to play a few more times to get a handle on the strategy. It's more or less Diplomacy meets Risk with a GOT theme. Very fitting to the books.

That sounds amazing. :aww:

I may or may not spend all of my free time there.
