You level up the weapon and then use other items to break it down for xp. You can save the weapon with a siphon but you get less xp. Link to comment

There are some changes we are conducting today to ensure we maintain an appropriate balance to the skill and make sure that Invention works how we envisaged it. • Increase experience gained from using Augmented Gear by 25%. • Add communication to Gizmo Shell interface, to explain that you gain more positive perks if you have a higher invention level. • Change the cost of Augmentors from 200 base parts & 50 Enhancing components to 45 base parts, 45 flexible parts, 45 tensile parts, 8 enhancing components & 7 powerful components. • Reduce experience gained from using Unique components by 30 to 50%. • Reduce materials gained from disassembling Gold and Coal. • Reduce experience gained from disassembling unstrung bows. • F2P willl be able to use meteorite dust on F2P skills again • Drokar and Oldak will not talk to you about invention until you have completed the tutorial. We have also already made a number of Hotfixes to ingame bugs: • Change to stop the disassembly of God capes. • Change to stop the disassembly of Agile top & legs. • Change to remove a way that players could get stuck in the tutorial. • Change to remove a second way that players could get stuck in the tutorial. • Change to remove combat dummies from Augmented Gear levelling. • Change to restore Telekentic Grab functionality. • Change to restore repair functionality of Blood Amulet of Fury/Superior Seasinger Cape. • Change to ensure Challenge Gem challenges do not cancel make-x while disassembling items. • Change to Harmony Seeds to not include Invention. We are genuinely interested in your feedback and will be continuing to listen to the comments you make, while watching all the lovely game data you produce, as we look to refine and improve the skill.
