Boot up the computer normally if you can, if you can't the try to boot it up in safe mode (with command prompt). If you can then type "chkdsk /r" in the command prompt. If you get something along the lines of "The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process." then you're in trouble, but there is a few things you could do. Which version of windows are you using? That has a lot to do with it.

start your computer up in safe mode and update your drivers. if you updated your drivers recently and its only now starting to have this issue, then you will need to roll back your drivers.

you need to go to device manager to do this.

start - right click computer - properties - and device manager should be on the upper left corner if your using vista/windows 7

xp - start - right click my computer - properties - hardware - device manager
