as he should have. I'm surprised they were trying to stop people from beating him. Say I was close to the official and someone tried to assassinate him and failed, I'm beating the shit out them.

Watching the gif. over and over the most scary part is not after the initial fail but the second attempt, he tried to unjam it or whatever and then still failed. To realize someone is trying to kill you and then to make a feeble effort to stop them and then for them to achieve after another try would be even worse. At least get me when I'm not looking.
