shockly Posted February 17 Posted February 17 Just wanted to throw this out there because I’m honestly not sure what to do with the game right now. I’ve been playing for a long time and I've hit this wall plenty of times before. I’m at that point where when I log in, I just feel… kinda uninterested. I'm obviously max xp with my alt at 3.6b. I've trimmed since joining the clan and recently my focus was combat achievements. With some help I got the hard tier completed and enjoyed learning solo KK, rots and having a better understanding of other boss mechanics. I'm not really interested in doing more and harassing clan mates to help me complete other stuff. I've tried clues but I'm not super interested in that for some reason and there are no boss logs I'm really interested in doing. I'm assuming just because of the time spent doing pvm the last few days for the combat achievements. So I guess we'll see how long that lasts. Have any of you hit this point too? What did you do to get out of the slump? Did you take a break, or find new goals, or just focus on hanging out socially? I still enjoy being part of the clan and community, so I figured I’d ask here and see how others handle it. Appreciate any thoughts.
Thoraa Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I had this last year so know how you're feeling. Personally I just stopped forcing myself to play something I wasn't fully enjoying at the time and felt like a chore to log in, I thought I'd be gone for a lot longer than I was but Jagex kept doing that thing where they chuck out cool new updates and drew me back. When I got out of my funk and came back I looked at different goals and achievements I still had left like ultimate slayer, clue titles etc and started working towards those but instead of straight focusing on one I do bits of each here and there so I don't burn out and I also mix it up with other games in between Not saying this is the answer for you but If you're needing that break away, you'll still be a member of the community so don't feel like you have to play to stay here, there's leave of absences and retirement so you can jump straight back in where you left off when you come back but also remember there's huge roadmap this year so that may help to find that RS spark again.
Firemakers Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I've hit burnout many a times, friend. There's many a way you can get out of the slump; what you should try to keep in mind is that the beauty of RuneScape is you can play it However you want, and if you feel the need to take a break, there's absolutely no shame in that, we're all human, and sometimes we just need some time to recharge until that itch to play comes back. As Thoraa said, there's Retirement and Leave of Absence as an option for you if you decide to take a break from the Game, you'll always be a part of the Gladz community and will be welcomed back whenever you return
Skaders Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I blame that one KK combat achievement lol It's the most runescape I've played ever since joining the clan, but I haven't really had a proper burnout. I think the main thing is you need to mix it up a lot of time, and just have a reason to want to get on whether its actual gameplay, to afk something, to attend an event, ect. Having a goal is something that keeps me playing, mine is 5.8 xp rn, after that I am not really sure what I might find to do. I have had a few little quiet breaks though, I might disappear for a few days or a week from everything and that kinda helps. Just need to find a balance where as Thoraa said you aren't forcing yourself to get on and treating it like a chore. It is a game at the end of the day to enjoy in your free time, so just mix it up a bit try find something else you can enjoy for a bit maybe.
Ancity Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I have had my account for 20 years and it's still not maxed. I burn out fast when grinding one thing over and over. I took a break for a few years but that was due to life. I was never in a rush to hit max or comp. I take my levels in chunks now.. getting all my 80's to 85 then to 90 and rotating thru them. Once I felt that blah feeling about coming on due to what I was thinking about doing, I would find something else to be excited about in the game. When that didn't work... I took a break. This game will always suck you back in
Papa Walrus Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I play for fun. If you aren't having fun, don't log in. Personally, I look at spots I'm not great at (ex: I want to push Zammy for master CA's) and try to figure out a way there. If I can't solo a boss or do something at a boss I consistently try until I get it right because it feels rewarding to pull off "that rotation" or "that time" or feat. The other thing, this is a rabbit hole... True Trim Super fun, I know a few of us in CC are working on true trim because of the promise of global collection log.
James Posted February 17 Posted February 17 As cliche as it sounds: This game is a marathon, not a sprint. I've been playing for 25 years now and my last case of burnout resulted in a 9 year break. I tried to come back a couple of times in those 9 years but it wasn't until November that I was actually ready. Even now I'm making sure to pace myself and making sure that RS isn't the ONLY game that I play. The past couple of weeks I've been working on a couple of Dragon Age Games because it's my favorite fantasy franchise. My advice? You clearly love RS and might not be ready to step back and retire fully. Which is fine. But what else do you do think you might enjoy doing with your free time? Do you like to play other games? What hobbies do you have or might want to start?

I do too. I also had to kill Rex Matriarchs like 20 or 30 times just to get the achievement where you kill them all within 5 seconds of each other. Those were both tiring.

This game will always suck you back in I think this has always been one of my problems. My story with this game is I played to have fun. People would trash talk levels or exp back then and I'd lose sleep grinding to get more exp. My goal was always max exp to begin with because of that, and I got that done about 10 years ago now. After that it was slowly doing other achievements, boss logs and getting exp on my alt.

I hadn't done HM Zuk because I struggled with taking so much damage during waves. Finally just said to myself that I'm going to do it until it's done. After that I moved on to Elite Dungeons and did that until I learned those mechanics and felt really comfortable. Then I figured I'd just do the actualy combat achievements. I want to branch out and do more but right now I just don't feel like doing anything on RS so I've been playing BF6 trying to unlock things. Also the True Trim has always been an absolute no to me. But I think part of my problem is grinding things until I get what I want and simply not knowing what to do afterwards if I don't have another goal in mind. So I'll probably end up looking into what's been added to that lol Edited February 17 by shockly

What hobbies do you have or might want to start? I've been playing Battlefield 6 off and on. I enjoy games like that but I've always had a completionist mindset when it came to games. I want to do everything. So when I play a different game, most of the time when I'm in between matches or something I'll just be thinking that I could be doing something on RS that's working towards some goal.
shockly Posted February 17 Author Posted February 17 Part of me is tempted to try and host events aimed at helping other players learn and feel comfortable with bosses that they typically would shy away from. I like the idea, but working 50-60 hours a week, I kind of want to do my own thing on the weekends usually. I guess we'll see.
Fedal Posted February 17 Posted February 17 Taking breaks is fine and honestly another part of the RS gameplay loop at this point. When I didn’t feel like logging in I’d find other games to pass the time instead of sitting at wars for the sake of it, and in a couple weeks the RS itch eventually came back. It always does . Sometimes a little detox is all you need.

While I will always advocate for somebody taking a larger role in the clan; I would like to caution you from taking on too much if you're burnt out on the game plus working up to 60 hours a week. Speaking from experience on that one.
Lemurs Posted February 17 Posted February 17 Speaking from my experience. You just have to take one day at a time. If you feel like playing runescape that day in your free time, work towards some smaller goals to get the instant dopamine hit for completing something instead of the long term ones. If you don't feel up to it that day, then don't. If you force yourself into it, eventually it starts to feel like a full time job without any of the benefits. Like many others have said, and what I'm currently in. You always have the option to take a break from the game if you feel its necessary.
Echare Posted February 18 Posted February 18 I've personally hit burnout on RS a ton. I take a break when it happens. Might be a week or two, might be a few years. The game has typically still been around when I wanted to come back.
Leaf Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Yes, I've been playing for many years and I've been burnt out a couple times already. Majorly in 2023, I took a break. When I was thinking of coming back I saw the Hero Pass update and just said I'll come back later. I found that playing other games or doing other hobbies helps you become interested in the game again. For example, I played a lot of sports and did a lot anime watching. Eventually the burning desire to play RS comes back full force and it goes fuels me for a while. In the end when I feel like burning out is happening, I tend to set crazy goals, which puts me away for good for a while. So I say its good to take a break.
