Behind the Scenes | January 2016

We start the year with the smell of smoke, grinding gears and sparks of joy…

2016 is the year of Invention with the skill itself going live on 25th January. It’s an elite skill, focussed around high level players, with multiple ways of progressing all the way to level 120. Be among the first to discover a new field of science, experimenting and pushing the RuneScape world into the future! Create wondrous devices and invent powerful perks that you can use to augment your existing weapons and armour, making your gear the best it can be.

How about accumulators that build up XP every time you fail to catch fish or mine ore? How about exploding mechanised chinchompas - cute and dangerous? How about perks like venomblood, where poison heals rather than hurts you? You’ll need plenty of parts to tinker with, so that’s where the new disassemble system comes in. Take apart all those old items clogging up your bank and convert them into new materials for a wide range of shiny new stuff!

There are plenty of videos on Invention via the website and more to come. This is really only the beginning of this new skill, with several more updates planned later in the year, particularly for all the non-combatants out there. So make sure you get a decent head start and begin levelling up the following skills that are necessary to begin inventing. These are:

  • Smithing - Level 80
  • Crafting - Level 80
  • Divination - Level 80
You may wish to take advantage of our Winter Weekend that focusses on Invention from 12:00 UTC on 8th January until 12:00 UTC on the 11th January. This event will see the following useful boosts for budding inventors:

  • 50% base XP increase in Guthixian Cache.
  • Enriched spawns every 10 mins instead of every hour.
  • Double the supply of battlestaves in stores and rewards.
  • All chromatic dragons drop an extra hide on top of whatever drops.
  • Ithell Harps have a reduced chance at going out of tune.
  • Double XP and reputation at Artisans' Workshop.
I’ll see you in the guild!

15 Year Celebrations | The party starts on 4th January!

Next year RuneScape celebrates its 15-year anniversary, and we’re adding a bunch of new content so we can all celebrate together. From the 4th of January, log in to get your celebration pack and search for 15 portals across Gielinor which, when found, unlock rewards including nostalgic emotes that each represent an individual year in the history of RuneScape.

You can also decorate a brand new party area with fantastic statues, all while enjoying the massive pile of magical XP boosting food that will be laid on!

Around almost every lodestone we will be holding balloon drops containing even more rewards and some special versions of “The Drop” - our in-game quiz show about RuneScape’s rich history. Look out for the cracker wings too, which are one of my favourite bits of cosmetic ever. We look forward to celebrating this epic milestone with you all, so do drop by. P-A-R-T-Y ? Coz we gotta!

Hati | Combat, skilling and rewards

As is traditional in the cold wintery, Fremennik months, Hati the winter wolf returns and this time he’s brought even more friends. For those of you new to the perils of Rellekan folklore, Hati and his furry crew provide a bunch of short, temporary combat and skilling challenges with some very generous bonus XP rewards and funky outfits. Along with Hati, Skoll and Eir the Valkyrie, Fenrir is tagging along for a ride, providing a new test for you brave warriors. You will be rewarded with the body and leg pieces of the Fremennik wolf outfit, as well as a fat chunk of summoning or herblore XP.

RuneLabs | There’s still time for the Player Power Area

You have until the 15th January to add your suggestions for a brand new area of the game world. Currently scheduled to be added to the game in Summer 2016, this is your chance to see your dream land become reality. After the 15th, we will poll the top suggestions in-game. After the decision has been made, we'll ask you to determine the main activities that take place in this area. Formulate your ideas and head over to RuneLabs to record them.

Solomon’s General Store | January Sales

From Friday 1st January, Solomon’s got four weeks of January Sales lined up, so you can see in the new year with style.

The first week features the Dwarven Warsuit, Blazehound, Ariane Pack and more. Check Solomon’s Store from the 1st for full details of what’s up for grabs.

Each Friday, a new set of items will be available at a 50% discount, so be sure to log in and check out what’s on offer for that week. The final week of sales begins on Friday 22nd January and finishes on Thursday 28th January.

If there’s something you’ve had your eye on all year, or there’s Christmas cash burning a hole in your pocket, Solomon’s got something for you. Need more RuneCoins? You can redeem Bonds in-game, click ‘earn’ in Solomon’s Store, or purchase RuneCoins directly via the website.

In other news

We also have a host of other events throughout January in Treasure Hunter, like the return of dragon chests and adding a brand new god chest. There will also be crazy, RuneScape-y, piñata fun and we’re adding some great looking Corrupted Armours too. These are earned by collecting Corrupted Souls from monsters. The Corrupted Souls can be traded in for Soul Gems, Corrupted Armour pieces or Slayer XP. Also be sure to check out the fantastic Premier Club that was mentioned last month. You can still sign up for it until the end of January and it’s well worth a look.

Have fun, and a Happy New Year!

I'm not interested in invention at all because I have so many other goals and now I have to deal with this :jade:.

Tears of Guthix on the first day will instantly get you up to about 15+, then ignore it until the next weekly reset and do ToG again. After a few weeks you'll already have gained a bunch of levels without actually even training the skill once. That's how I did Divination up to about level 60. I was also putting BXP and lamps into it, along with Jack of Trades XP books and Troll Invasion XP every month. If you don't like a skill, there are so many easy ways to get XP nowadays without actually training it. Obviously you'll have to train at some point if you want 99 or 120. But you can get to about level 80 in a skill with minimal effort.

D&D xp, lamps, and BXP typically are not available for the first few months of a new skill.

Keep in mind 99 invention is 40m xp, not 13m xp

Popadopolous

Trying my best to get ready for Invention. But the 3 skills needed are currently in the 60s for me, so hopefully I can get them all to 80 by launch day.
