PSA: Botanist's amulet

There was an update in December which introduced silver jewelry into the game. Some of these items can be useful, but we're specifically going to look at the Botanist's amulet. It has a 5% chance of creating a 4 dose potion instead of a 3 dose potion. This consumes one charge, and each amulet has 5 charges.

These have a highly variable price

If we take the sell price, that means you're paying 800gp per extra dose of potion. If we take the buy price, you're paying 1600 gp per extra potion dose. For comparison, the cheapest potion that is used in overloads is extreme magic, which according to the wiki is worth 5,338gp (not including any effect such as portables, modified botanist's mask, scroll of cleansing, or the 3 piece factory outfit effect, which all reduce the price). That's 1,779gp per dose. So even with paying 8k for the Botanist's amulet, it saves you money with the cheapest potion in an overload. With the more expensive parts of an overload, you save a significant amount of money. It also works on overloads themselves, which are valued at 55,333gp according to the wiki which means each amulet charge saves you 18,444gp, or 92,221gp per amulet (not including the price of the amulet).

With double experience weekend coming up, a lot of you are making overloads, and you should be wearing these amulets. You use one amulet per 100 potions you make. So if you make 1k overloads including making the extremes that should be around 60 amulets used. This effect does not work with crystal flask combination potions, just regular vial potions.

As for the specifics of using the amulets, the charge system on silver jewelry is incredibly poorly coded. All 5 charge amulets stack in the bank. However, every amulet with fewer than 5 charges is a separate item. If you buy 60 amulets and put the 5 charge amulet in your preset, you will end up with 60 bank spaces taken up by 4 charge amulets. To avoid this complication, you need to unbind your worn items from your preset (make sure you're wearing the items you want to be wearing). This way you'll keep your amulet equipped until it reaches 0 charges, at which point you can grab another one out of your bank (or have one sitting in your inventory in your preset).

This concept can also be applied to non-overload potions, such as super ranging potions, to save money or maybe even make these potions profitable to make.

In case you are wondering about the profitability of making these Botanist's amulets due to their high price as a low-level item, you can make 870 Botanist's amulets per hour, each using 1 Jade, 1 Silver bar, 1 Ball of wool, and 1 Cosmic rune. These are worth around 2,800gp. If you take the sell price (4,003), that's 1,046k gp/hr. If you take the buy price (8,000), that's 4,524k gp/hr. The high buy price is almost certainly not accurate, this is a low-volume item in the GE and there aren't enough people merchanting them for the margin to be low all the time.

That's it! It's not a huge deal, it might save you a few million gp, but it's something a lot of people aren't aware of because of new it is, how relatively insignificant it is, and how few people research and publish things related to efficiency in RuneScape 3.

Good to know!  Wish I hadn't just made 30 overloads last week. :jade:

Oh no, 30 of them. :reporter:

I'll certainly buy some for the last 150k to 99 herb though.

Not like jade made 1k before AoD

Are you usually buying the amulets for about 4k? Trying to figure out if buying the raw mats of GE and selling the completed amulets would be worth it.

The prices fluctuate greatly

As I said in the post, at the high end you might be making 5M/hr, low end would be around 1M/hr. However, this is a low-volume item. You might have to sit on a GE offer for hours or days to get a bulk amount of them sold, when you're making up to 870 per hour, it's hard to imagine you could do it for more than a couple hours at a time without just sitting with a bunch of unsold amulets.

For the specifics on making them, buy cut jades, silver bars, ball of wool, and cosmic runes. Make the unstrung jade amulets at a portable forge (the closest furnace to a bank, the portable provides no benefits to crafting however), 14 per inventory, use presets. String the jade amulets, 14 per inventory (using ball of wool on the unstrung jade amulet - there is the lunar spell to string amulets but that's 1.8 seconds per amulet compared to 0.6 seconds per amulet of a ball of wool). Enchant the jade amulets, 28 per inventory (cosmic runes in large/small rune pouch, not a big deal if you don't own one - and equip an air staff).

There are tons of other methods in the game to make this kind of money, however. It could be that you lack the requirements for a lot of those, though.

Also, ironically this item was released on Old School RuneScape today, it is the same in every way except that it is called "Amulet of Chemistry". It is currently worth around 2,100gp, and you can make around 900k gp/hr on OSRS making them if you assume those prices - which is pretty good for those requirements.
