Breaking Dicing

Today we have taken the step to disable dice in the game. From today they will no longer work, and next week we will remove them all from the game. This was due to the amount of scamming and general “bad use” of these ingame dice items. While we strongly believe that what you do with your treasure is entirely up to you, we have had to step in to deal with this issue.

What do we mean by “bad use” of dice items? Well, gambling for GP was never the intention of the dice. There is no support for PvP gambling within RuneScape and we do not intent to add any. Gambling is a risky pastime and nobody should ever rely on gambling to make money.

Also, there was a high degree of scamming or general bad behaviour when using dice, particularly since the removal of bots a few weeks ago. While we hope that players are “streetwise” enough to recognise a scam, it’s not always the case. Sometimes we have to step in and change the game.

Apologies for not doing something sooner. Since we brought back free trade we really have tried to leave it up to the player to decide what’s right and wrong. But the overwhelming feedback from the forums is that we have to just stop the problem.

Don’t gamble! There are too many people who will try to scam you or alter the odds in their favour. It’s never supported by JAGEX unless it’s about gameplay (like the duel arena). It’s likely that dice scammers will move over to another method of trying to scam you, so please, be vigilant and remember... if it sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a lie.

Just don’t do it.

EDIT:

A few answers to some common questions:

Dice bags will be deleted totally from the game next week. They will not become rare. Do not buy any, you're likely to lose cash if you do.

We are aware that other things can be used to gamble with in game. We will look at them individually if they become an issue.

No, I do not consider dueling to be the same as dicing.

About time. I think Jagex should introduce some sort of RS casino / lottery type deal though. It would actually serve to remove money from the game, which is always a good thing.

In other news, makers of stoves removed any heat producing parts to combat people burning themselves. A viable alternative to this lack of usefulness is the microwave, but even that is rumored too risky for the individual actors to be left alone with.

I feel like they just could have imposed a way to ensure dice were used for their intended purpose (although I don't know what it is) than to just remove them completely.

that would be interesting to see but im sure they will put in some small limit or something like that..

I completely support this decision 100%. As other said, they should have done this much sooner. What I don't understand is why they "disabled" the dice first and plan to completely remove them later. Why not just remove them now? Whatever the case, I'm just glad it's done.

I do like the idea of a Runescape lottery though, as long as it is regulated by Jagex and not the players. It has been suggested many times over the years so maybe Jagex will add something like that to replace dicing.

RS Lottery won't actually happen— Jagex stated above that they will never support gambling unless it's about gameplay (like the duel arena).

I think the real problem is that people suck - when I hosted games, if I lost 10 mill, I paid out 10 mill. No big deal. Dicing is harmless and was actually fun - just like gambling is in real life. The thing is that people just suck and will lie, cheat, and steal or bitch when they lose fairly.

Yeah, but that will always be the problem in a non-regulated gambling industry. I liked the idea of dicing, but would never have actually done it simply because there is no guarantee that you will not be scammed.

Sucks that people are so attached to their pixels that they go as far as scamming other people into believing they are a legitimate "business-person" by selling ranks and/or buying them. Fortunately I was always one of the dicers who paid out win or loss, it was fun I don't care about the GP so much and if I lost I didn't care it was a risk I planned to take.

seems like jagex wants us to buy all of our rsgp instead of making it in game.

Oh trust me, they are more against that than anything. That's why they went after bots first then the dicers. I think they just want people to work for their money the old fashioned way.

I don't blame jagex - Rafi is right - because people do suck if they kept this in the game it is just more trouble for them with no real benefit if they leave it in.

That being said, anyone making lectures on "earning you gp" and what not - in order to make money in dicing you really either have to start with a solid amount of GP to balance out losses or be someone like Max who was independently wealthy and this was just a way to make his money work for him - why have mills of gp sitting in the bank when you can play a game and try to add to it?
